Social surveys, statistics and analysis relating to the institution of marriage lead us to believe that the institution is in crisis. Photographers who are devoted to photographing weddings disagree and point out that photographing weddings remains a basic income for photographic studios. If you are about to refute the marriage crisis surveys and analysis and you are getting married, read this article; it will help you choose the photographer that will photograph the most important moments of your life.
Start your search for the right photographer by asking different photographers to show you latest albums of marriages they photographed and look through the wedding albums of your friends. This will help you to train your aesthetics about good photography. Notice the lighting setup and try to determine whether the photographs have artistic quality and originality, for example whether there are pictures of the couple in an environment that reflects the temperament and personal style of the couple, such as the beach, a park, in front of a hotel pool, etc. If you don’t understand much about photography, and they all look the same, ask a friend who deals with photography to help you. Before you make a deal with a photographer ask about his history and creditworthiness (a photographer who worked for years in the market depends on his good reputation, which he does not risk easily) and trust the recommendations of friends who used the same photographer to whom you are thinking to assign the photographing of your wedding.
As clear agreements make good friends, do not leave anything to chance and don’t make assumptions about the services that the photographer will provide. Define in advance as clearly as possible the services to be undertaken by the photographer, and bear in mind that some services are optional, and that you will have to ask for them. Also, ask the photographer whether he will do the photographing himself, or one of his partners, the number and size of photos he will deliver to you and the cost for additional reprints. If you want the material in digital format, or on DVD, ask for the service and agree on the cost. Wedding photographers offer the following services:
- a) Dressing of the Bride: The photographing of the bride at her home while she is getting dressed is a new practice, adopted in our country from abroad and gives the otherwise formal day a casual, personal touch.
- b) Shaving and Dressing of the Groom: not as usual as the photographing of the bride's dressing, but it also offers a personal touch.
- c) Photographing at the Church: Ask the photographer to tell you how many people will be on the photographing team and what will be used to illuminate the church. This service includes also group photographs of the couple with their relatives, best man/bridesmaid and other loved ones, and photographs in places other than churches (see below Location Photographing).
- d) Photographing in the Studio: photographing in the studio is done by sophisticated lighting and backgrounds. Although the photographing in a studio is old-fashioned, if you have the time, it is worth it because it will enrich your wedding album with some 'formal' portraits.
- e) Photographing at the Reception: This service is paid by the hour, so estimate in advance the length of time of the photographing at the hotel, or the hall where the reception will be held to know what it will cost.
- g) Location Photographing: the location photographing is done at places other than the church. The photographing can be done on a beach, in front of the pool of a hotel, a park and other favourite places which you should discus in advance with the photographer, who with a little imagination can take same special portraits of your wedding.
After the wedding the photo material will have to be printed, transferred on a DVD, or be delivered to you in a digital format, according to the agreement made at the beginning. If the material will be printed and the photographer doesn’t suggest a specific type of album, tell him what you want on the basis of a known sample. Agree on the number and size of photos in the album, the dimensions of the album, the cover type, i.e. paper, leather, etc. and the type of paper for the inside pages, and then bind the photographer to deliver the material on a specified date. To avoid possible disputes and to avoid being disappointed by the outcome, or pay for services you didn’t receive, ask the photographer to give you all the details of the agreement in writing, and pay your invoices only when you are given the finish product.

The cost of marriage is undoubtedly large. Remember, however that it is the photographs / DVD of your wedding that will bring alive for a lifetime the moments of the most important day of your life and see the photographing of your wedding as 'value for money' i.e. see the value of what you get from the photographer you select in proportion to the total amount you will pay for your wedding. You can find really good opportunities amid the crisis, so it does not worth it to cut money from the photographing of your wedding while you're willing to pay for a more expensive reception, or a more expensive flower decoration because the image of flower decoration and the decoration of the hall will fade in your memory without the photos, or DVD of your wedding to refresh your memory.
